"Preferences": interaction/relationship between "Posting defaults" > "Posting language" and "Public Timelines" > "Filter languages"

Hello all,

I’m a newbie author here and this is my very first topic.

I’d like to talk about these 2 options at the Preferences / Others menu:

  • Posting defaults > Posting language
  • Public Timelines > Filter languages

How these 2 options interact each other when, for instance, there’s only a proper noun as text in a toot? Do they have a similar behavior as toots with images/pictures/photos only (i.e., the language filter is ignored)?

I’d like now to make a suggestion, but I don’t really know if it’s a good idea after all: what about to ask new Mastodon users what language will they use when tooting? I think of this as a kind of so called “Getting Started” first time guide/tour. I was told that most Mastodon users don’t set their posting language, so I think that asking this to users, would improve Mastodon’s language filtering and user would receive more relevant toots.

What do you think?

Thanks for reading!
