(N00b) question about federation - toots are not appearing

Apologies if I have misunderstood how this works, but as I understand it, if I create a specific user at my own instance (@me@myinstance.social using myemail@provider.com) and then another at Fred’s instance (@me@freds.social using myemail@provider.com) then I should be able to see toots created when I login as myemail@provider.com on the federated timeline?

If that is true, then can someone please tell what I might be doing wrong because my federated toots are not appearing? Thanks!

I’m running Mastodon 2.1.2, system info is: Linux eldritchworld.nom.es 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.51-2 (2017-12-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux

The email address you have used to sign up has no meaning except for notifications.

To see the roots in a federated timeline at least 1 user from instance A needs to subscribe to updates of at least one user of the instance B.

Got it! It now works perfectly thank you - it was just my confusion
over the role of the email address.
