How to intelligently clear the cache?

There is the command tootctl cache clear, but it does not accept any arguments. Does it delete the complete cache? What happens if someone e.g. boosts an image toot whose image was deleted from the cache before. Will the image then be redownloaded from the respective instance? Would the image be redownloaded if I would just look at the toot again, without it being boosted?

Is there a more accurate description of what this command does somewhere?

tootctl cache clear is here to clear Rails’ cache, which is a short-lived cache of internal data (not of media files).

This is not the cache you are thinking about, that is handled by tootctl media remove, and yes, files get re-downloaded as needed if possible.
