How to implement captcha for new account signup

Mastodon instances seem to attract a good number of spammy bot registrations. Interested to hear if anyone has been successful implementing a captcha at signup, and how you did it. Self-hosted is fine, mods to code are fine. Working on it ourselves at the moment but interested to hear from others.
