1.4 RC feedback

I thought, let’s create a thread for 1.4RC feedback. So go ahead!

Let me begin. I have the following issues (noticed on mastodon.social where I have a spare/test account):

  1. Language filter doesn’t really works. I selected everything, except English, Dutch and German. But all languages are still displayed in the federated timeline. In the local timeline it looks better, but maybe this is because of languages used on mastodon.social (BTW: I still see a lot of Chinese in the local timeline). When I select all languages they are still displayed. Not only short statuses, but also long ones.

  2. If the language filter starts working it would be great if it is also enabled for your home timeline. There are a lot of bilingual people I follow. I’m very interested in content I understand, but not in content I can’t understand. << This would be a killer feature.

  3. This has maybe nothing to do with this RC, but I thought fixing the relatively small column width for wide screens was a priority? It was the first thing I fixed when starting my own instance and I know I’m not the only one. So I’m a bit disappointed in that (not for myself, but for users on other instances).

That’s it! It is a great new release!

Hey.

I had to install libprotobuf-dev and protobuf-compiler packages to make CLD3 to build correctly during the bundle install phase. I guess this will be detailed in the release notes.

Also, I had to save my instance description to make it appear up-to-date. An old version was displayed…
Plus, when I currently look at the numbers of users and posts in the /about/more page, it’s not updated too.

Still a few things that may or may not be related to the 1.4RC but I just saw they were not fixed:

  • The feed view is still not centered on large screens.
  • I had to remove the CSP policy from my nginx configuration as it gives “script-src to self” errors.

It is not supposed to.

I had to remove the CSP policy from my nginx configuration as it gives “script-src to self” errors.

Yeah, CSP is a pain. I don’t actually recommend using it, personally.

No issues sur far here, but I would like to disable some user-feature inside my panel, like making language filter / personal instances block…

Hey Mastodevs! My first post here . Update to the Persian translation is coming in approximately one hour. Most of it is already done. I’m just doing the final checks and cleanups…

I confirmed rightmost column height problem was solved by 1.4RC on Safari for Mac/iPad. Thanks for changing nest of rendering DOM.
Rightmost column doesn't have fixed height on Safari 10.1 os x 10.12.4 · Issue #2899 · tootsuite/mastodon · GitHub

I’d want say thank you @Gargron, ( could know already )

no you also need pkg-config

anyway here’s my 1.4rc2 feedback:

the html structure leaves a lot to be desired
the ui is getting clunky and very hard to manually fix with each update
i outline some problems

, the current solution i have for computerfairi.es is here

on the non-ui side, the documentation for develpment environment is broken, you must now start rails on port 8080 to be able to see css and images (PR here) and seeing who favourited your toot is completely broken (shows number, but when you click the number it shows your account instead of a list of accounts who favourited that post)

if you do not want to experience all these issues do not update to 1.4rc2 or, worse, roll back to 1.3.3

[details=Hidden from main post but not deleted]i’ve had to change my mastodon toot links into pseudo-links because discourse forum software does not allow “new, untrusted members” to post more than 2 links per post

have fun copying and pasting the toot numbers to get to my toots to read them unless you didn’t actually want actual feedback[/details]

[edit: moderator edit, as the link issue has been resolved we took the liberty to add them into place, and also hid comments in relation to the issue which is solved]

Language filter doesn’t really works. I selected everything, except English, Dutch and German. But all languages are still displayed in the federated timeline.

Possibly worth noting here … the existence of language metadata comes in from remote instances, so if you are viewing statuses which should be filtered but are not, it’s possible that they are not marked correctly (or at all). Some specific links to statuses you expected to see or not see and where they exist and where you wanted to see them would be useful.

In the local timeline it looks better, but maybe this is because of languages used on mastodon.social

It is almost definitely the case that any instance running 1.4rc1 right now is going to have more prevalent and accurate language tags, which would explain the local timeline being better in that regard.

(BTW: I still see a lot of Chinese in the local timeline). When I select all languages they are still displayed. Not only short statuses, but also long ones.

Interesting! Can you give me some links to these?

If the language filter starts working it would be great if it is also enabled for your home timeline. There are a lot of bilingual people I follow. I’m very interested in content I understand, but not in content I can’t understand.

That’s a good point. I had viewed this mostly from the “if you are following someone, you probably want to see everything they post” perspective … but I can very much see a case (even more so with filtering OUT rather than filtering IN) that it could apply to home TL as well…

Like what? What particular changes from 1.3.3 do you have in mind?

How so?

I was waiting for author of the docs PR to adjust some details but decided to just do it myself - resolved.

That sounds like 100% bug, need a GH issue for it

Thank you for your explanation. Yes off course the language detection is done on the server of origin (same as on Hubzilla). So it takes time for the fediverse to make this perfect.

Here are few Chinese toots that weren’t filtered out:

And two Spanish:

Of course it’s very difficult to recognize the languages of short toots, so I think these results are remarkable. In Hubzilla there is also a language dectector, but because the posts over there are much longer by average, it’s easier to recognize the languages.

Back to Hubzilla. They have a content and language filter for every post received. I also have a lot over bilingual people I follow over there and this language filter is making the overall experience much better. Only images come true, but that’s a good thing.

Found a bug viewing remote profiles. See

Fixed in 1.4.0.3 (1.4 RC3).

Reopened, cause RC3 didn’t fixed it. :disappointed:

try this command
apt-get install protobuf-compiler libprotoc-dev

Maybe you need install protobuf-compiler if you want protoc

yum install protobuf-devel boost-devel gflags-devel lmdb-devel
yum install protobuf-compiler
protoc --version
libprotoc 2.3.0

After installing ver1.3.3 to ver1.4rc2, the notation of the number of users, the number of TOOTs,
and the number of instances connected is no longer increasing.

After installing rc3 it seems that the problem has been resolved.

To be clear, when you talk about the number of users, toots (not an acronym  ), and instances connected to, you mean on /about/more?
